In 1905, the large mansion that currently sits just east of Fifth Avenue was built for furniture magnate William D. Sloane’s daughter, Adele, and her husband James Abercrombie Burden. Though considered a wedding gift, the house was actually constructed ten years after the couple was married. The building was designed in the Beaux Arts style by Whitney Warren, who was also responsible for Grand Central Terminal.
