The New York Junior League, a non-profit women’s volunteer organization, was established in 1901 when Mary Harriman, a member of Barnard College, formed the group with nine friends. Their primary goal was to contribute to the community. Originally, there were four volunteer committees dedicated to the subjects of library, arts, flowers, and music. Today, the League’s volunteer efforts are far more widespread, with movements throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
